Those Damn Tunnels
I had to make a quick trip to Logan this morning to drop off a friend. While I pride myself on being able to navigate Boston better than most GPS systems, it was tough going this morning! Finding the new entrance to the Callahan Tunnel wasn't easy. We actually drove over the tunnel and were unable to find the entrance. Time wasn't on our side anyway (it was 4:45am and her flight was at 6), so we followed the city's detour signs through downtown Boston. Somwhere along the way the signs ended and we found ourselves in Charlestown making a u-turn toward the Tobin Bridge. The signs continued in Chelsea, but the route was the most roundabout one I've ever done to get to the airport.
Anyway, with my friend dropped off at the terminal, the mission was to get home. There's nothing saying whether the Ted Williams Tunnel was open or closed, so we figured we'd head toward that tunnel and see whether we'd get turned back. Luckily the tunnel was open and the tolls were being waved. But while driving through, we kept looking at the ceiling and couldn't shake the fear of driving through a potential accident scene. Luckily we didn't see or experience anything out of the ordinary. Still, I'm glad I don't have to travel back and forth between the city and East Boston by car regularly. I can't imagine adding that much more anxiety to my daily commute.
I just moved to Eastie from Newton, and while I do check the ceiling more than I used to, I don't let it get to me. And yes, the Tobin Bridge detour is the most ridiculous thing ever. E-V-E-R.
